Botox/Neurotoxin

Cornerstone Dermatology discusses Botox/Neurotoxins and answers the most commonly asked questions about the treatment.

Botox/Neurotoxin

Wrinkles are a natural part of aging, but if fine lines and wrinkles are making you look older than you feel, botulinum toxin therapy is one of the most popular treatments for helping smooth the signs of time.

Botulinum toxin therapy works by blocking certain chemical signals that cause muscles to contract, temporarily relaxing those facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. While there are many neurotoxins on the market and they’re often referred to generically as ‘botox,’ here at Cornerstone Dermatology, we prefer Jeuveau, an ultra-purified form of botulinum toxin.

In the upper face, Jeuveau is used to treat frown lines, forehead lines and bunny lines (those pesky ones at the top of the nose). Around the eyes, it can be injected to treat crow's feet. In the lower face, it can be used around the mouth to target lipstick lines and provide a plumper appearance with the lip-flip technique.

Jeuveau treatment at Cornerstone Dermatology is performed during a single office visit. Patients return to everyday activities immediately after their procedure and usually begin to see results within three to seven days. Results typically last three to four months, depending on the individual.

Botox injections

  • Botulinum toxin (Jeuveau) is a prescription injectable treatment that works to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate-to-severe frown lines in adults. Jeuveau temporarily prevents your nerves from telling your facial muscles to flex, resulting in a temporarily smoother appearance.

  • Insurance plans do not cover aesthetic treatments to improve the signs of aging. If you think that your insurance company and or HSA may provide some reimbursement, we recommend you contacting them prior to your appointment. Patients are responsible for full payment at the time of their procedure.

  • You will feel a slight stinging at the injection site during your injection. Pain is very minimal and can be improved with an ice pack pre- and post-injection.

  • To prevent your botulinum toxin from spreading to areas where you don’t want it, avoid rubbing or massaging areas where you received the injections. Wait two hours before engaging in strenuous activity, including lifting heavy items, working out, and any other physical activity that raises your heart rate.

  • Side effects are mild and temporary and could include swelling, redness, soreness or bruising at the injection site. A headache is possible but uncommon. Weakness in a neighboring muscle, leading to a temporarily droopy brow or eyelid is rare and can be avoided by receiving treatment from an experienced provider.

The injections themselves may occasionally cause slight bruising, which will resolve in about a week.

  • Our goal is for you to look natural and refreshed. To this aim, we inject just enough to weaken and relax targeted muscles without affecting other muscles. This allows you to maintain your natural facial expressions.

  • No, botulinum toxin treatment does not affect your ability to feel.
